Spatial Imaging of Cracks in Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites by EIT

چکیده
Synopsis: Cementitious materials are generally classified as semi-conductors that are capable of carrying electricity when an external electrical signal is applied. The electrical properties of cementitious materials have been widely explored for monitoring their internal hydration processes. However, comparatively less work has been done in using the inherent electrical properties of cementitious materials for structural health monitoring. In this study, the electrical properties of a unique strain-hardening fiber reinforced cementitious composite termed Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) are utilized for monitoring the performance and health of ECC structural components. Previous work has utilized twoand four-point probe techniques for measuring ECC bulk conductivity and illustrating the piezoresistive properties of the material. This work introduces electrical impedance tomography (EIT) as a powerful sensing methodology that measures the spatial distribution of conductivity over large areas of ECC elements. With a tomographic mapping of ECC conductivity, the distribution of strain fields and cracks in ECC elements can be observed in incredible visual detail.

Tomographic Imaging of Crack Damage in Cementitious Structural Components
Cement-based materials are widely used in the construction of civil infrastructure systems. However, normal wear-and-tear and extreme loading can result in the damage and deterioration of such important civil structures. In this study, a novel approach to the detection of cracks in fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) is proposed. The approach is based upon the electrical properties ...

Cement-based composites (for example, concrete) are brittle materials that crack when loaded in tension. Current strategies for crack detection are primarily based upon visual inspection by an inspector; such approaches are labor-intensive and expensive. Direly needed are sensors that can be included within a structural health monitoring (SHM) system for automated quantification of crack damage...
متن کاملFlexural Behavior of Cementitious Composites Reinforced by Synthetic Fibers
The application of fibers to reinforce cementitious materials is a well-known subject. At first, asbestos fibers are used in industrial process to produce fiber reinforced cement sheets. Thereafter, various types of synthetic fibers are produced and used as asbestos substitutes. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the effect of synthetic fibers on the flexural behavior of cementitious co...

Durability of concrete structure in marine environments is a big issue for many decades due to chloride attack. Chloride penetrates the concrete structure and accelerates the corrosion process of reinforcement which decreases the life of those structures. Also shrinkage cracks in concrete play main role for chloride penetration through concrete surface. Many researchers tried to find easy and ...
متن کاملSelf-Healing Capability of Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composites for Recovery of Watertightness and Mechanical Properties
Various types of fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCCs) were experimentally studied to evaluate their self-healing capabilities regarding their watertightness and mechanical properties. Cracks were induced in the FRCC specimens during a tensile loading test, and the specimens were then immersed in static water for self-healing. By water permeability and reloading tests, it was determi...
